A former Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Saddique Abubakar, on Sunday resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced his withdrawal from politics.

Mr Abubakar announced his decision in a post on X on Sunday, days after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared his wife, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, wanted over alleged abuse of office and diversion of public funds.

“I say goodbye to the murky waters of Nigerian politics. I no longer belong to any political party and will therefore not vie for any office. However, I will continue to support ordinary Nigerians to the best of my ability,” Mr Abubakar said.

The former CAS did not disclose reasons for his decision. However, his wife, Ms Farouq, is currently being investigated over the alleged diversion of about N37 billion and is said to be on the run.

Mr Abubakar quit politics and his membership of the APC barely five years after he entered politics, following his retirement from the Nigerian Air Force.

In 2023, he contested the Bauchi State governorship election on the APC platform against incumbent Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but lost the poll.
