Senator representing Zamfara West in the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Abdulaziz Yari, on Wednesday donated 15 trucks of assorted grains to victims of flood in the Gummi Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Yari made the announcement when he paid a sympathy visit to the Emir, Gummi Emirate Council, Justice Lawal Hassan (retd).

The ex-governor of Zamfara State also donated 5,000 mattresses as well as 10,000 blankets to the victims.

Recall that heavy rainfall, which lasted about 14 hours on Friday, washed away 2,795 houses in Gayari, Falale and Gummi towns among others.

The communities lost 16 lives while unspecified hectares of farmland were submerged by the downpour.

Mr Yari said during the visit that the calamity really touched every concerned citizen of the state.

He said, “I am giving these relief materials as an emergency measure to cushion the hardship the affected persons would encounter. We already have an assessment committee on the ground to collate data and figures regarding the damages incurred as a result of the incident. The committee is also to find out the cause of the disaster for further management to prevent recurrence.’’

Mr Yari assured that once the assessment was completed, arrangements for rebuilding the affected communities would commence.

He stated, “It will be a policy under this rebuilding plan that no one would be allowed to use mud in the building. Adequate modern building materials and engineers

would be made available to ensure that the people have good houses for themselves.’’

Mr Yari urged the victims to have faith in the will of Allah and pray for peace.

In his remarks, Mr Hassan thanked the senator for his concern and timely response to the community during the critical period.

He urged the affected communities to cooperate with the assessment committee to enable them to see the clear picture of the damages caused by the incident.
