Ex-U.S. defence official convicted for helping Nigeria-based scammers launder fraud proceeds released from prison

A former United States Department of Defense official, Samuel Marcus, who pleaded guilty to helping Nigeria-based scammers launder millions of dollars in fraud proceeds, has been released from prison after spending less than nine months in a federal correctional facility.
The Peoples Gazette had in July reported that the 34-year-old entered a guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Joel Slomsky to one count of concealment of money laundering after he was arrested and indicted by the Department of Justice in February and was facing up to 100 years’ imprisonment.
Prosecutors alleged that the offences occurred between July 2023 and December 2025 when Mr Marcus served as a money mule for online scammers operating in Nigeria, while the defendant was working as a Logistics Specialist with the Department of Defence.
Despite being fully aware of their criminal activities, Mr Marcus worked directly with the scammers who operated under the aliases ‘Rachel Jude’ and ‘Ned McMurray,’ among others.
He was accused of receiving proceeds from the illegal dealings into his personal and business bank accounts before re-routing the money to accounts controlled by the group in Nigeria.
It was gathered that even after he was informed by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents that the funds passing through his accounts had been stolen and that the activities were consistent with money laundering, Mr Marcus allegedly continued to work for the fraudsters in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, at a sentencing hearing on Friday, four months after Mr Marcus pleaded guilty, his lawyer and prosecutors agreed that he had served sufficient time in prison for the offence. The court credited him for the nearly nine months he had already spent in custody awaiting trial and subsequently ordered his release.
Reports noted that the offence would have ordinarily carried a more lengthy sentence but his punishment was mitigated in part due to him being born with several intellectual disabilities, including autism. He would however remain on supervised release for three years while continuing to receive mental health treatment.
“This is a very serious offense,” Judge Slomsky said, calling the amount of money involved “startling,” while Mr Marcus stated that hopes they (victims) fully forgive me one day.”
