Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney has died, the family announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement by the family, Mr Cheney died from complications of pneumonia, cardiac and vascular diseases, adding that “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed.”

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” the family noted.

He was 84.

Mr Cheney served as the vice president to President George Bush for two terms between 2001 and 2009 and was widely regarded within the American political scene as the chief architect of U.S. ‘War on terror’ in the Middle East.

The family added that they are “grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
