The hospitality industry can promote Nigerian cultural heritage, cuisine and tourism through indigenous food, improved service delivery and cultural exchange.

President of the Restaurant, Cafe, Bars and Clubs Association of Nigeria (RCBC), Morenike George-Taylor, said this during an interview in Lagos.

She said food could serve as a tool for cultural diplomacy, bringing people from different backgrounds together and fostering mutual understanding.

“Food brings people together. If we are able to leverage our ability to cook our local dishes and serve them to people from other cultures, we build bridges,” she said.

Ms George-Taylor said restaurants were increasingly sourcing local ingredients to promote Nigerian cuisine and sustainable food practices.

She said the growing interest in Nigeria during the December festive period demonstrated the role of hospitality in attracting international visitors.

According to her, the country’s entertainment events, diverse cuisine and friendly people contribute to its appeal as a tourist destination.

“Hospitality is what makes people choose to come to Nigeria. We are friendly and kind people, and we have really delicious food that I think anyone would like to try,” she said.

The president further stressed the need to train hospitality workers to provide services that meet international standards and ensure positive experiences for visitors.

She said improved service delivery was essential to sustaining international interest in Nigeria and encouraging visitors to return.

Ms George-Taylor said hospitality training was essential to equipping workers with the skills needed to meet international service standards as Nigeria attracted growing attention through its arts, culture and entertainment.

She, however, identified the high cost of electricity, diesel and petrol as major challenges affecting the operations and profitability of businesses in the hospitality sector.

“Our cost of operation is ridiculously high right now because of the increased cost of diesel, petrol and lack of power,” she said.

She said sustainable solutions to the high cost of energy would improve business profitability and support the growth of the hospitality industry.
