A Gombe-based non-governmental organisation, Jewel Environmental Initiative, has called for urgent measures to tackle the persistent attack by hippopotamuses on farmlands in Gombe communities.

The chief executive officer of JEI, Ismail Bima, made the call on Friday in Gombe.

Mr Bima said it had become imperative, in view of the serious economic and wildlife concerns the attack had created over the last five years.

He added that the unfriendly cohabitation of the animal and farmers in affected communities “is greatly affecting” food security, farmers’ livelihoods, and the conservation of animals that are now endangered species.

If left unchecked, it could lead to something more serious that may threaten the lives of the hippos and even farmers and fishermen alike,” stated Mr Bima. “There is a need for urgent intervention because the population of the animal is growing, and we need to conserve them while protecting the livelihood of farmers, too. We need to establish a sanctuary for them to create a clear boundary between the animals and farmers so as to protect all interests.”

Mr Bima said that the construction of the hippo sanctuary would lead to economic prosperity, as the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen would be protected. He further stated that the government could generate revenue from tourists who would come to see the hippos for research or recreational purposes.

He said that the population of hippos across the over 10 communities in the three local government councils of Gombe State is estimated at around 180 to 190.

He noted that during a hippo census in 2021, the population was put at 81, adding that only three deaths have been recorded since then due to their low mortality rate.

Mr Bima, therefore, urged farmers affected by hippo attacks on their farmland to embrace smart agriculture to avoid further damage.
