Expert warns against squeezing, puncturing whitlow infections

A medical doctor at Lugrem Hospital in Abuja, Ummusalma Faruk, has advised Nigerians against squeezing or puncturing whitlow, warning that improper treatment could worsen the infection and lead to serious complications.
Ms Faruk gave the advice in an interview on Monday in Abuja while explaining the causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention of the painful finger infection.
She said whitlow could occur when bacteria entered through cuts or injuries around the fingernail, adding that some cases were caused by the herpes simplex virus.
According to her, bacterial whitlow commonly presents with redness, swelling, warmth, pain and, in some cases, accumulation of pus around the fingernail or fingertip.
“People should not attempt to squeeze, cut or puncture an infected finger because doing so can worsen the infection and potentially spread it to deeper tissues.
“The appropriate treatment depends on the cause. Bacterial infections may require antibiotics or drainage by a healthcare professional, while herpetic whitlow requires different management because it is caused by a virus,” she said.
The expert advised people experiencing severe pain, increasing swelling, pus, spreading redness, difficulty moving the finger or fever to seek prompt medical attention.
She also urged Nigerians to maintain proper hand hygiene and avoid biting their nails or picking at the skin around the nails and ensured manicure and pedicure equipment were properly cleaned and sterilised.
Ms Faruk said minor cuts around the fingers should be cleaned and protected to reduce the risk of infection and other related health complications.
She further advised people to avoid touching suspected herpes sores and then touching their eyes or other parts of the body, warning that the virus could spread through contact.
Whitlow, also known as a finger infection, commonly affects the tissue around the fingernail or fingertip and may occur following minor injuries to the skin.
