Health experts have urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to include a dedicated budget line for family planning in its 2025 appropriation bill.

The call was made during a media roundtable in Abuja on Monday, organised by the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON), under the theme “Discussing and Reporting Family Planning Issues in the FCT.”

Opeyemi Adeosun, programme manager at HERFON, appealed to the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, to collaborate with the National Assembly to ensure a specific budget allocation for family planning.

He identified the absence of such funding as a significant challenge, which has left women and adolescents at risk of maternal mortality, unintended pregnancies, and other health complications.

“FCT contributes significantly to Nigeria’s high mortality rates, yet it is among the few states without a dedicated budget for family planning.

“Without a specific allocation, the government is not accountable to this crucial sector,” Mr Adeosun stated.

He also underscored the media’s role in creating awareness about the consequences of inadequate funding, particularly for policymakers, community leaders, and the public.

Bukola Afeni, communications consultant with HERFON, noted the importance of providing young people with accurate information on family planning.

She called on media organisations to advocate for increased funding and improved accessibility of family planning services, especially in underserved rural areas.

“Family planning empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

“It reduces maternal and infant mortality rates and fosters economic empowerment,” Ms Afeni said.

She emphasised that prioritising family planning in the budget would significantly improve health outcomes and contribute to national development.
