Falconets beat Poland 1-0 in U-20 Women’s World Cup friendly
Nigeria’s under-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, defeated Poland 1-0 in an international friendly on Friday as part of their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.
The match was played at the Municipal Stadium in Brzeg, Poland.
Mary Mamudu scored the only goal of the match in first-half stoppage time to hand Nigeria victory over the Poland Under-20 women’s side.
Mamudu found the net in the 45th minute plus one to give the Falconets a 1-0 lead going into the break.
Neither side could add to the scoreline after the restart as the Falconets held on for victory in their first of two scheduled warm-up matches in Poland.
The official Super Falcons X account confirmed the result after the final whistle, stating that Mamudu’s first-half strike secured the win for Nigeria.
The victory forms part of the Falconets final preparations for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in Poland from August 31 to September 22.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier confirmed that the Falconets would face Poland on Aug. 28 before taking on South Korea on Sept. 1 in their final warm-up matches.
The friendly matches are expected to give players opportunities to further acclimatise to conditions in Poland and test themselves against different styles of play.
The matches will also help the team sharpen its tactical understanding, gain valuable experience against quality opposition and adapt to the pace and intensity of international competition.
The fixtures are also expected to enable the technical crew to assess the team’s progress and make necessary adjustments ahead of the World Cup.
The Falconets will play South Korea in their second friendly on September 1 at the Remes Resort and Spa Football Stadium in Poland, with kick-off scheduled for 4: 00 p.m. local time.
At the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria will compete in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia.
The Falconets will face Spain on September 7, China PR on September 10 and New Caledonia on September 13.
The Falconets have been among the most consistent teams in FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup history, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014. However, the team has never won the title.
