The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed the management of Air Peace to appear at its headquarters in Abuja on June 23 to answer questions relating to alleged extortion, cancelled and delayed flights without refunds, offences that attracted stiff sanctions and fines per the Nigerian law.

The airline officials were also asked to present a detailed log of refunds to passengers whose flights were cancelled over the last one year.

The FCCPC, on Friday, said the directive became pertinent due to the deluge of complaints over Air Peace’s alleged poor treatment of customers and refusal to refund them.

Citing multiple sections of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, the commission said such practice of withholding customer’s funds without rendering the required service was a violation of the law and will not be tolerated.

“The Commission, invoking Sections 32 and 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, requires Air Peace to appear before the Commission at its Abuja Headquarters on Monday, June 23, 2025,” the memo, issued last Friday, stated.

FCCPC requested a list of all cancelled flights and records of compensation to affected passengers dating back to a year.

“The airline is further directed to produce documentary evidence including complaint log for refunds over the past twelve (12) months, total records of processed refunds to date, list of cancelled flights on all routes within the past twelve (12) months, and remedial actions taken to mitigate consumer hardship resulting from cancelled flights,” the summon stated.

The summons came days after Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole accused Air Peace of stranding passengers who booked their tickets online to favour those who bought at the check-in counter at double the price.

Mr Oshimhole said he checked in for a 6:30 a.m. flight the previous night and was at the check-in counter at 6:05 a.m. on Wednesday. Still, he said that he was denied boarding.

The lawmaker said he and other passengers including a nursing mother with her six-month-old baby were not allowed to board after buying the ticket at N149,000 online. 

He claimed that other people willing to pay N250,000 at the check-in counter were allowed to board while online ticket holders were told to pay an additional N101,000 to be rebooked for a seat on the next flight.

The incident drew widespread outrage and prompted renewed scrutiny of Air Peace’s operational practices.

However, the management of the domestic carrier, in a statement on Wednesday, which failed to mention the name of Mr Oshiomhole, condemned the senator for allegedly assaulting its staff, describing the former governor’s conduct as “unruly” and “unbecoming.”
