FCT registers pregnant women, distributes 500 delivery kits
On Thursday, the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) registered pregnant women for a health insurance scheme to reduce maternal mortality in Abuja.
The programme, organised by the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) in collaboration with the USAID Integrated Health Programme (IHP), seeks to sensitise pregnant women to curb maternal mortality.
Adedolapo Fasawe, the FCT Health and Environment Secretariat (FCT-HES) mandate secretary, disclosed that 500 free delivery kits had been distributed to pregnant women who enrolled for the health insurance scheme.
Ms Fasawe said that there was no reason for a woman to die due to childbirth complications. According to her, it is not only during delivery that women have complications.
She also said that distributing the kits encouraged pregnant women to register for health insurance. According to her, the kit usually costs about N50,000 and the practice before now is that everything is listed for the woman to buy before delivery.
The minister of state for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, said the FCTA was working to ensure that each ward in the six area councils had a functional primary healthcare centre.
Ms Mahmoud said there was a need to increase health insurance coverage in the FCT, especially for those in the non-formal sector.
She added that health insurance helps attain Universal Health Coverage and called on the FHIS to ensure that health maintenance organisations discharge their duties perfectly.
Also, the FCT director of USAID-IHP, Frances-Lois Adewumi, reaffirmed her organisation’s support for FHIS.
She said this was to build capacity through staff training and subsidised healthcare services to reach more vulnerable people and all residents of the FCT in the long run.
The scheme was launched in 2009 to improve the health of FCT residents by providing affordable, accessible and quality healthcare services. It has enrolled over 160,000 beneficiaries from the formal and informal sector and vulnerable persons such as pregnant women, the elderly and the indigents.
