Female lawyers demand speedy justice for Ibadan funfair victims

The International Federation of Women Lawyers has called for the speedy investigation and the discharge of justice to victims and survivors of Wednesday’s funfair tragedy in Ibadan.
Â
FIDA’s chairperson in Oyo, Ademubowale Adelabu, directed the call to Governor Seyi Makinde’s government in a statement on Friday.
Â
A stampede at a children’s funfair, held at Islamic High School Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday, claimed 35 lives and left many injured.
Â
The event was reportedly organised by Naomi Silekunola (former Ooni of Ife’s wife) in partnership with Agidigbo Radio Station, Ibadan.
Â
FIDA urged the government to take proactive measures to ensure justice for victims, mindful of the police promise to oversee and investigate the incident.
“It is extremely sad that 35 children have been confirmed to have lost their lives while six others are under critical conditions,” said the statement.
Â
It added, “FIDA Oyo State is the voice of the voiceless and the fighter for the promotion, protection, and preservation of the rights and welfare of the women and children in our society. We stand resolute and in solidarity with every child whose dreams and aspirations were cut short due to the stampede.
Â
“We amplify their voices and the voices of their families and call for further urgent and proactive action to ensure speedy investigation and discharge of justice to both the victims and the survivors.”
