Female students nabbed for assaulting teenager
Two students were on Tuesday docked in Kado Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for assaulting a teenager, Diamond Onyemobi, in her residence.
The police charged Precious Yahaya, 25, and Goodness Zacheaus, 24, both of Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja, with criminal trespass and assault.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution counsel, Stanley Nwafoaku, told the court that on September 7, the teenager’s mother and complainant, Sandra Aladum, reported the matter at Galadima Police station.
Mr Nwafoaku alleged that on the said date, the defendants trespassed into the complainant’s apartment and assaulted her teenage daughter.
He alleged that the teenage girl sustained an injury on her head and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The prosecution counsel further told the court that while the defendants were assaulting the girl, the complainant began to video the incident, and one of the defendants smashed the phone.
According to him, during the police investigation, the defendants admitted to the crime.
He added that the offence contravened sections 348 and 268 of the Penal Code.
David Idris, counsel to the defendant, prayed the court to grant bail to the defendant in the most liberal terms while citing sections 35(4) and 36(5) of the 1999 constitution and sections 158 and 165 of the Administrative Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
The defence counsel also said the defendants would not jump bail or interfere in the investigation, adding that they both have reliable and gainfully employed sureties.
The prosecution counsel, however, did not object to the bail application made by the defence counsel.
The judge, Mohammed Wakili, granted the defendants N300,000 bail with a surety each in like sum.
Mr Wakili ordered that the defendants provide a reliable surety who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He added that the sureties must provide a BVN printout, two recent passport photographs and a valid identification card, which the court registrar must verify.
The judge adjourned the case until October 25 for a hearing.
