FG affirms support for AFRIDEX 2026

The federal government has affirmed its support for the African International Defence Exhibition 2026.
Interior minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo endorsed AFRIDEX 2026 when he received a delegation, led by Maj.-Gen. Umar Alkali, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Mr Tunji-Ojo said that the support was part of efforts to promote collaboration, innovation and indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s defence and security sector. He also said that it was important for institutions to embrace openness and partnership to maximise impact and national growth.
The minister further said that the initiative represented the future, and not just the present, adding that sustained efforts in this direction would attract international participation and foster the growth of indigenous industries.
The minister also described the initiative as a vital platform for both emerging and established innovators, particularly Nigerian youths, who continue to demonstrate exceptional creativity in the digital and cybersecurity sectors.
According to Mr Tunji-Ojo, providing visibility for such talents remains essential for national pride, economic advancement and global competitiveness.
The minister advised the team to ensure that AFRIDEX became an annual event, noting that, while the maiden edition may present challenges, it would also provide valuable lessons for future improvements.
Mr Tunji-Ojo, however, called for broader collaborations across all security and intelligence agencies. According to him, this is not a time for territorial thinking, but for collective progress.
Mr Alkali disclosed that AFRIDEX was a premier global defence and security exhibition scheduled to be held from October 26 to 29 in Lagos.
He noted the ministry’s critical role in ensuring the event’s success, particularly in security and visa facilitation.
The leader of the AFRIDEX delegation also disclosed that the event was organised with the support of the federal government of Nigeria and hosted by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria.
He said that the event aimed to bring together global leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and innovators.
“The exhibition will showcase cutting-edge solutions across land, air, maritime, space, and cyber domains with an expected participation of more than 30,000 international attendees and 500 exhibitors,” he said.
