First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says the federal government will continue to implement policies and programmes to empower persons with disabilities and improve their quality of life.

She added that the federal government remained committed to disability inclusion, empowerment and equal opportunities across sectors.

Mrs Tinubu, represented by the wife of the vice president, Nana Shettima, said this at the closing ceremony of the 3rd National Para Games in Abuja on Friday.

The theme of the games was “Ability in Disability: Celebrating Ability, Determination and Excellence”.

The first lady described para-game athletes as true heroes of the nation, praising their resilience, discipline and determination.

She said the athletes demonstrated courage over fear and excellence over limitations, inspiring hope and national pride.

According to her, every participant represents the strength of the human spirit, showing that ability transcends physical challenges.

“The performances at the games reflect the determination and limitless potential of Nigerians when given the opportunity to thrive,” she said.

She urged the athletes to remain steadfast and continue striving for greater achievements.

She congratulated medal winners and commended other participants, noting that their determination and efforts were geared toward victory and success.

The first lady said the games underscored the need to build an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are supported and empowered.

According to her, the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu prioritises inclusion and ensures no citizen is left behind.

She added that appointing a presidential aide for disability matters had demonstrated the government’s commitment to inclusive policies and their implementation.

She said the Renewed Hope Initiative complements government efforts through economic empowerment programmes for persons with disabilities.

According to her, the initiative provides N200,000 business recapitalisation grants to 250 persons with disabilities in each state and the FCT.

She noted that the grants are renewed annually during World Disability Day.

Mrs Tinubu commended the National Sports Commission for the successful organisation of the games and its efforts to reposition the sports sector.

The first lady expressed optimism that friendships built during the games would endure and strengthen national unity.

Mrs Tinubu urged Nigerians to continue supporting athletes and promoting inclusion in all sectors of national life.

She reaffirmed the government’s resolve to create opportunities for all citizens, regardless of physical ability.

The National Para Games, held from March 27 to April 3, featured athletes from the 36 states and the FCT.
