The federal government has condemned an attack by Houthi militia on the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.

The attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians and left over 300 people injured.

In a statement on Sunday, the spokesperson for the ministry of foreign affairs, Sunday Oluwafemi, said Nigeria condemned the attack, describing it as a dangerous escalation that disregarded the safety of civilian life.

The ministry said the attack violated Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and undermined ongoing efforts to promote peace, security and stability in the Middle East.

“Nigeria reiterates its call on all parties to respect international law, exercise utmost restraint, and refrain from any further action that could escalate tensions, endanger civilian lives, damage civilian infrastructure or further undermine regional peace and security,” the statement read.

The ministry expressed solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia, extending its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the attack.

The statement noted, “Nigeria also wishes those injured a speedy and full recovery.”

The ministry emphasised the need to respect Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and uphold international law, particularly obligations to protect civilian lives and safeguard critical infrastructure.

There was a fresh attack on the airport on Sunday drawing widespread condemnation.
