FG urges ICAN to support tax reforms, other initiatives

The federal government has urged the leadership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to support tax reforms and other initiatives introduced by President Bola Tinubu to achieve the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
The call was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, when the 64th President and Chairman of the Council of ICAN, Haruna Yahaya, and his team paid him a courtesy visit on Friday in Abuja.
According to Mr Idris, chartered accountants in Nigeria have played a significant role in enhancing transparency and integrity in the global financial sector.
He assured ICAN that the Tinubu administration was committed to partnerships that promoted accountability, transparency, and institutional strengthening for national development.
Mr Idris said, “The promotion of accurate information, public orientation, and responsible governance is central to the values of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. It is in this regard that we call on ICAN to support the ongoing reforms of this administration, including the new tax policy set to take effect in January 2026.
“We urge you to champion this cause in your financial and professional sphere. We also welcome opportunities to expand our engagement with ICAN in ways that enhance public communication, strengthen financial literacy, and support professionalism in government institutions, all aimed at improving public trust and confidence.
“Your willingness to work with this administration is a testament to your commitment to building stronger, more resilient, and solid national institutions.”
Speaking earlier, Mr Yahaya hailed Idris for fostering trust in public information and communication.
“Since assuming office in 2023, you have confronted one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how to build trust in public institutions and strengthen national cohesion through clarity, purpose, and consistency in information dissemination.
“The ministry has demonstrated commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and development in Nigeria. We have been following its progress and are proud to be associated with your efforts.
“The winning of the host right for the UNESCO Category 2 Media Literacy Institute in Abuja is a remarkable achievement that will make Nigerians proud,” Mr Yahaya said.
He further highlighted other achievements of the ministry and expressed ICAN’s willingness to collaborate with the ministry.
