Fire guts section of FIIRO building in Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency says a fire gutted a generator house on the Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO) Oshodi road in Oshodi.
The agency’s permanent secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyinyolu, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said LASEMA received a distress call at about 10:20 p.m.
“Following distress calls received through the 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at 10:20 p.m., LASEMA activated its response team from Cappa Base in Oshodi.
“Upon arrival at 10:22 p.m., it was discovered that a generator house was engulfed by fire. Information gathered revealed that the fire ignited as a result of overheating of the generator in operation.
“Preliminary investigations conducted revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was overheating from the generator engine. Fortunately, there was no injury or loss of life due to the incident,” he said.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu added that about 80 per cent of the generator house was razed by fire.
He added that the fire was swiftly curtailed from spreading to adjoining buildings within the facility.
“The fire has been successfully extinguished and damping down has been concluded,” he said.
