Fire razes over 500 stalls in Kano market

The Kano Fire Service says 529 temporary stalls were destroyed in a fire that broke out on Wednesday at Shuwaki Market in the Gari Local Government Area of the state.
This is contained in a statement by the service’s public relations officer (PRO), Saminu Abdullahi, on Thursday in Kano.
Mr Abdullahi said the service received a distress call at 3:25 p.m. from the Gari Fire Station reporting a fire outbreak at the market.
“On receiving the distress call on Wednesday, we quickly sent some of our personnel and firefighting vehicles to the scene to quench the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market,” he said.
According to him, of the more than 1,000 temporary stalls in the market, 529 were completely razed.
Mr Abdullahi, however, said that no lives were lost in the fire incident.
He attributed the cause of the fire outbreak to the carelessness of some drunkards residing within the market premises.
The PRO advised residents to always handle fire and flammable materials with utmost caution to prevent similar incidents.
