The Federal Fire Service (FFS) called on members of the National Assembly to include the establishment of fire stations in their constituency projects.

The FFS controller general (CG), Samuel Olumode, made the call on Monday in Abuja while commemorating the International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD).

Mr Olumode also said that there was a need for the NASS to fast-track the repeal and enactment of the Federal Fire Service and Rescue Act.

He said Nigerians should not see firefighters as only emergency responders but as fellow citizens who risk their lives daily for the safety of others.

”Corporate Nigerians should include the fire service in their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

”All these will go a long way in increasing our coverage and reducing response time,” he said.

He also said that in line with the 2026 IFFD theme, ”Courage Under Fire: Recognising the Sacrifices and Realities of Firefighting”, the service would take a pause to honour the lives of alive and deceased personnel.

”We remember those who have paid the ultimate price; we stand with those who carry injuries, both visible and invisible, and we reaffirm that their sacrifices are not forgotten; they are the foundation upon which this service stands,” he said.

The CG promised to continuously take deliberate and measurable steps to ensure that the welfare, dignity and long-term well-being of personnel were prioritised.

”Under this leadership, the welfare of our personnel will not be treated as an afterthought; it will remain a priority,” he said.

He also set up a six-man committee, saddled with the responsibility to award and recognise exemplary firemen.

According to him, the award will be to recognise the professionalism and bravery of officers, and awardees must be confirmed personnel of the service.

”Beneficiaries must have worked for a minimum of two to three years in the service, obtained a recommendation from his or her head of unit and other very senior officers, and must have a zero misconduct record, among other criteria.”

Mr Olumode further revealed that before the end of May, the service would obtain many breathing apparatuses alongside other safety equipment to limit endangering the lives of firemen.

He urged Nigerians to appreciate and commend sacrifices made by fire men in curtailing fire outbreaks in the country.

”A single thumbs up will go a long way in encouraging firefighters to effectively discharge their duties of saving lives and property.

”When you see a fire truck on duty, please give way, because every second counts and your cooperation can mean the difference between life and loss.

”At emergency scenes, allow firefighters to do their work; avoid crowding, interference or actions that may put lives at greater risk. Respect safety perimeters and follow instructions given by emergency personnel,” he said.
