First female Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally to visit Anglican West Africa province July

The first female Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, is scheduled to visit the Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa between Sunday, July 26 to Saturday, August 8 2026.
The Archbishop of Canterbury refers to the top bishop of the Church of England and symbolic leader of Anglicans worldwide.
Details about the scheduled visit are contained in an announcement by Lambeth Palace, the official London residence of the archbishop on March 27.
Lambeth Palace said Archbishop Mullally’s visit followed an earlier invitation by the Primate of West Africa and Bishop of Asante-Mampong, the Most Reverend Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith.
The statement said, “Lambeth Palace is pleased to announce that Archbishop Sarah will visit the Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa.
“Archbishop Sarah will make the visit from Sunday, 26 July to Saturday, 8 August 2026, at the invitation of the Primate of West Africa and Bishop of Asante-Mampong, the Most Revd Dr Cyril Kobina Ben‑Smith.”
The notification stated that Archbishop Mullally, who doubles as the senior bishop of the Church of England will visit Ghana and Cameroon only.
“The Church of the Province of West Africa covers 19 dioceses in eight countries of West Africa. Archbishop Sarah will visit Ghana and Cameroon,” the statement noted.
Lambeth Palace noted that the purpose of the scheduled visit “is to learn and listen, to strengthen the ties between the See of Canterbury and the Province, and to foster deeper ecumenical relationships.”
“The visit is part of Archbishop Sarah’s commitment to building relationships across the Anglican Communion, and sharing in the life, witness and mission of Anglicans around the world,” it added.
Archbishop Mullally’s planned visitation followed an earlier online meeting with Archbishop Cyril of the West African Province, who previously attended her installation at Canterbury Cathedral in March.
