Five dead as flash floods, landslides pound Tanzania

The incident also damaged five houses, leaving 10 homeless.

At least five people have been killed by flash floods and landslides caused by ongoing torrential rains in the Morogoro and Kilimanjaro regions in eastern and northern Tanzania.

Officials said three people killed by flash floods on Tuesday in the Morogoro region were from the same family, said Shaaban Marugujo.

The Morogoro regional commander for the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force on Wednesday, said in the other incident, two people, including a 12-year-old primary school pupil were killed after their house was destroyed by landslides in Kilimanjaro region.

The Kilimanjaro regional commissioner, Nurdin Babu, further said that the flash floods and landslides also damaged five houses, leaving 10 households homeless.

On December 3, 2023, landslides and floods caused by heavy rains hit Hanang district in the Manyara region, leaving 89 people dead and more than 5,600 others homeless, according to official data.
