Five more suspects have been arrested over the theft of jewellery from France’s Louvre Museum.

These arrests were made on Wednesday as police continue investigations into the raid of the Galerie d’Apollon building of Louvre Museum. 

During the robbery, eight of France’s crown jewels, worth an estimated €88 million, were looted.

“There is DNA evidence linking one of the five suspects arrested to the robbery that was committed,” French local media, BFMTV, reported, qouting Laure Beccuau, a Paris Prosecutor.

The other four were arrested as “associates,” who could help provide further information for the investigation, though not directly involved in the robbery.

Wednesday’s arrests brought the number of arrests made since the theft at Louvre Museum to seven. After one week of investigations on Sunday, two suspects were arrested.

One of the first two suspects was arrested at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Algeria.

Also, forensic investigations of some objects found at the scene of the burglary, including a yellow vest, a helmet and a blowtorch, indicated “determining DNA” that matches one of the suspects.

The heist was another incident recorded at The Louvre. Historically, in 1911, Mona Lisa, world’s most famous painting, was stolen from the museum by a former worker. But it was found after two years in Florence, Italy.

Similarly, two Renaissance-era pieces of armour were stolen from the museum in 1983. They were recovered some decades later.

Other French museums have suffered thefts of artefacts and other valuables in recent times. Last month, thieves raided Paris’s Natural History Museum, looting gold samples worth 600,000 euros ($700,000).
