The federal government has launched FreeTV, a subscription-free digital television platform designed to expand access to television services for millions of Nigerians.

The initiative, implemented by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), is part of the country’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting and aims to expand access to free digital television for Nigerians.

Here are five things Nigerians should know about FreeTV.

1. Viewers can access FreeTV without a monthly subscription.

2. The platform uses a new satellite-first model, relying on the NigComSat-1R satellite and hybrid satellite/IP delivery to support nationwide broadcasting and reach more viewers.

3. The platform offers access to more than 100 free-to-air channels across state and national stations, covering news, sports, education, entertainment, movies, and children’s shows. Viewers can also tune in on their mobile phones through the FreeTV app, available for download on Google Play or the Apple App Store.

4. There are several ways to access the platform, including purchasing a compatible decoder for less than N20,000 or using a compatible DVB-S2/DVB-T2 television or decoder.

5. The platform is intended to help modernise broadcasting in Nigeria by improving picture and sound quality and expanding coverage both nationwide and abroad, so Nigerians anywhere in the world can watch local TV content, while creating opportunities for Nigerian broadcasters and content creators.
