Five transmission towers collapse after vandal attack in Akwa Ibom

TCN said the severe attack would affect electricity supply in the area as the company prioritises using the Ekim transmission station.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says five 132kV transmission towers collapsed on Friday along the Ikot Abasi-Eket route due to severe vandalism.

In a statement, the TCN said its linesmen discovered the damage during a routine joint line patrol on Sunday, after vandals stole several critical structural bracing members from the N9, J4, N10, N11, and N12 Towers, causing the collapse.

The TCN also said seven additional towers were affected by the vandal attack on the same transmission corridor, affecting the J3, N8, N13, N14, N15, N18 and N19 towers.

The severe attack is set to affect electricity supply in the area as the company prioritises using the Ekim transmission station, leaving Ibom Power as the only station without supply.

Meanwhile, the company is set to mobilise immediate construction on the affected areas to restore power.

The company condemned the sabotage and said state authorities have been notified to facilitate investigations to prevent future attacks along the line route, while assuring citizens of its commitment to ensuring a reliable national grid.
