FLASH: Car explosion kills one in Liverpool

A car explosion outside a hospital in Liverpool has injured one person and left another dead. Â
Although the cause of the blast has not been immediately established, counter terrorism detectives have been called in to begin investigation, a spokesperson for the hospital disclosed.Â
“It has not been declared a terrorist incident” but counterterrorism detectives were leading the inquiry “out of caution”
“It could take some time before they could confirm details,” she said.
Merseyside Police said the explosion was reported after a taxi pulled up at Liverpool Women’s Hospital just before 11:00 GMT.
The man who was injured is in stable condition, the police has said.Â
The chief executive of Liverpool Women’s Facility, Kathryn Thomson, said that patient access to the hospital would be restricted “with immediate effect,” but that emergency ambulances would be allowed.
“Where possible, we have diverted patients to other hospitals until further notice,” she added.
“We are reviewing our patient activity for the next 24-48 hours and patients should wait to be contacted for updates about any planned appointments or other attendance at the hospital.”
The car fire, which has since been extinguished, was “unsettling and disturbing,” according to Liverpool mayor Joanna Anderson, who added, “My sympathies are with those impacted.”
“I’d want to express my gratitude to the emergency services for their prompt response and for restoring calm to the situation,” she said.
The mayor further thanked the first responders for their swift response.
The scene, which has been cordoned off, was visited by a bomb disposal team and fire engines.
