FLASH: Heavily armed policemen cordon off APC headquarters

The national secretariat of the ruling, internally fractious All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently under siege by Nigerian police officers trying to prevent aggrieved party members from staging a protest.
Eleven police vans with numerous armed-to-the-teeth personnel were sighted as at 11:20 am on Monday along the Blantyre of the secretariat, Vanguard earlier reported.
Peoples Gazette gathered that many members of the party who were dissatisfied with the Mala Buni’s caretaker leadership, labeled as unlawful and unconstitutional, had planned to hold a demonstration at the secretariat of the party in Abuja.
The legitimacy of Mr Buni’s caretaker leadership has been under scrutiny in recent times, pitching several notable members of the ruling party in opposing sides.
The crises had fueled disagreements between junior labour minister, Festus Keyamo and the attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami.
Mr Keyamo had called for the removal of Mr Buni after the supreme court retained Rotimi Akeredolu as governor of Ondo following the failure of the petitioner, Eyitayo Jegede, to join Mr Buni in the suit.
Mr Keyamo had contended that Mr Buni, as a sitting governor, should not be in charge of the APC. He reiterated that this is in violation of Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution, which provides that a sitting governor may not hold any other executive post or paid job in any capacity during the time he is in office.
Mr Malami countered Mr Keyamo, describing his position as senseless and unwarranted.
The feud in the APC continues to undermine the unity of the party ahead of the 2023 elections.
