A Lagos Assembly lawmaker, Bisi Yusuff, has advised residents of Orile-Agege/Oko-Oba to protect their environment from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains, leading to flooding.

The lawmaker gave the advice on Monday while addressing protesters who stormed the assembly premise demanding a quick reconstruction of the canal in their area to reduce the impact of flooding in the community.

Addressing the protesters, Mr Yusuff said the community would be better poised to protect the environment when residents prevent people from dumping refuse in drains and canals.

The spokesperson for the protesters, Adenekan Abeeb, explained that the community is suffering from the absence of a proper drainage system.

He claimed that a construction company started work on the canal in February, 2022, but that since then, no progress had been achieved.

“The condition becomes worse during the rainy season. The roads are flooded and as a result, lives and property are lost.

“On the 9th of July, 2022, three young men in a vehicle were overtaken by the flood and two of them lost their lives at Oyatoki street, Oko Oba.

“Consequently, on the 20th of October, 2022, a bike man accidentally fell into the canal and he was later found dead on the third day.

“The water level has risen immensely on the street and people and vehicles cannot move freely. In addition, it is creating a great inconvenience to the hygiene of our society and that serves as a threat to the health of the people.

“We are hopeful that you will look into this matter and try to provide a lasting solution as soon as possible,” he urged the House.

Appreciating the protesters for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner, Mr Yusuff assured them that the House would look into the matter.
