Floods, landslides kill scores in India after heavy rainfall
Days of torrential rainfall has killed no fewer than 60 persons and damaged over a thousand homes in India’s Uttar Pradesh State, officials said Monday.
Houses were flooded and 46 people were injured in the rainstorm that persisted from Friday to Sunday in several districts.
State officials advised against non-esssential travel and waterlogged areas, including streams while schools were forced to shut down as a safety precaution to minimise movement and protect students.
Utter Pradesh recorded 66.5mm of rain unlike the usual average of 7.6mm rain expected for the period. The 775 per cent increase in rainfall surpassed the contingencies prepared by the state.
Rainfall in 57 of 75 districts was classified as “large excess” by state officials overwhelmed by the volume of rain which also reportedly killed over 150 animals, according to The Times of India.
Relief commissioner Hrishikesh Yashod said assessment of food crops was underway to determine losses.
“Assessment of crop losses is still underway as district administrations continue to carry out rescue, relief and damage assessment operations in affected areas,” Mr Yashod said.
