At least four bodies have been found as search intensifies to locate 10 mountaineers, including Nirmal Purja, who went missing in a climbing expedition in Pakistan where an avalanche struck Broad Peak, known to be the world’s twelfth highest mountain.

Two of the deceased bodies have been identified as Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. Pakistani authorities are yet to name the remaining two.

Mr Purja, a Nepalese and celebrity climber who joined and later exited the British Special Forces, led the team to ascend the mountain. He gained prominence in 2019 for climbing 14 of the world’s highest mountains in six months.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan, through its vice-president Karrar Haidiri, said it was yet to get hold of any of the 10 climbers after the avalanche struck. He said the lack of communication was “deeply concerning”.

Mr Haidiri further said search and rescue operations were underway and that the Pakistani government was exploring other alternatives such as helicopters to find the climbers and ensure their safe return.

“The club prays for the safety and successful rescue of all the climbers and stands in solidarity with their families and the international mountaineering community during this difficult time,” the statement added.

Other mountaineers feared missing include five Nepalese, one American, and Pakistani, Omani, and Chinese nationals. Another foreign climber whose nationality is yet to be determined was also among them, Mr Haidri said.

With 8,047 meters, Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world.
