Four suspects nabbed in Niger over alleged theft of electric cables, motorcycle

The Niger State police command has arrested three suspects for allegedly stealing electric cables and motorcycles in Kanti village Mashegun area of the state.

A statement on Friday by the command’s spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, noted that the suspects were arrested on Monday at about 6 p.m.

He noted that the suspects were arrested on August 3, 2026, during a routine patrol along Zugurma-Kainji road, by the police surveillance team attached to the Mokwa Division.

The suspects are identified as, Aliyu Gana 33, Aliyu Mohammed 22 and Babangida Umar 28, all of Kanti village via Mashegu.

“The suspects were intercepted in possession of two bundles of electric aluminum cables, and two bundles of recline cables loaded in a Toyota vehicle with Reg No. ZAR 455 FS suspected to be stolen items,” Mr Abiodun said.

He stated that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to have stolen the cables from a company in Kanti village where a project was ongoing. 

The spokesman added that the suspects were under investigation.

In another related incident, Mr Abiodun said the operatives arrested a suspected motorcycle thief in Mokwa.

“Previously on 24th July 2026, at about 3pm, police patrol team of Mokwa Division on patrol along Kpege road, intercepted and arrested one Nafiu Yahaya 26 years of Sokoto State in possession of one Bajaj motorcycle suspected to be stolen,” he said.

He noted that the suspect confessed to have taken the motorcycle from Airport Road Sokoto on 23rd July 2026 and moved to Mokwa with the intention to sell it before he was arrested. 

He added that efforts to locate the rightful owner had commenced.
