Jean-Noel Barrot described Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon as “intolerable” on Thursday, condemning the attacks for undermining the temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

“We strongly condemn these massive strikes,” Mr Barrot said on France Inter radio.

He warned that “war begets war” and emphasised the urgency of beginning negotiations as positions in the region continue to harden.

Mr Barrot also called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with densely populated areas of Beirut among the hardest hit.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attacks on Wednesday, urging that Lebanon be fully included under the Middle East ceasefire.
