France’s new prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, has resigned, the Élysée Palace announced on Monday.

Mr Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, who accepted it, the Élysée Palace said.

Nearly four weeks after his appointment, Mr Lecornu had only just unveiled the allocation of key ministries on Sunday evening.

The leader of the conservative Republicans, Bruno Retailleau, had expressed his dissatisfaction with the composition of the new cabinet and called a crisis meeting for Monday.

As a result, there was speculation about a possible withdrawal of the conservatives from the coalition with Mr Macron’s centrist camp, which lacks a parliamentary majority.

Mr Lecornu had been scheduled to make a government statement to the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, and reveal the remaining cabinet positions on Tuesday.
