The Federal Road Safety Corps, Delta State Command, has cautioned motorists to drive within speed limits and ensure good tyres on vehicles to reduce road traffic crashes during the rainy season.

The FRSC sector commander in Delta, Mufutau Irekeola, gave the advice in an interview with journalists on Tuesday in Asaba.

Mr Irekeola said that the warning to motorists had become necessary because of the approach of the rainy season.

“If we do not speed above limits stipulated by the highway code, road accidents will be reduced during the rainy season. All motorists should be cautious of other people using the road. They should know that they are not the only ones on the road. We have different categories of road users; we have pedestrians, motorists and cyclists who also use the road.
The problem with the rainy season is that the tyre grips on the road and the friction will be reduced,” the sector commander said.

He also advised drivers to ensure the general mechanical efficiency of their vehicles at all times.

Mr Irekeola further urged motorists to install speed limit devices on their vehicles to avoid arrest and prosecution.

He said that the corps had started enforcement of the order for vehicle owners to install speed limit devices.

“Speed-limiting devices are no longer limited to trucks and commercial buses, but all other vehicle owners should also install the devices on their vehicles,” the sector commander said.
