FRSC arrests suspected ‘one chance’ syndicate, recovers stolen phone in Ibadan

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it arrested a suspected member of a phone theft and “one chance” syndicate along the Eleyele-Ojoo corridor in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The spokesperson for the agency, Osondu Ohaeri, said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspects were intercepted on June 15, 2026, by an FRSC patrol team along the Babalegba-Eleyele-Ojoo route.
“The suspects were intercepted in the early hours of Monday, 15 June 2026, by an FRSC patrol team on routine patrol along the Babalegba-Eleyele-Ojoo route after officers observed a motorcycle rider pursuing a Nissan Micra (Reg. No. AJW 903XE).
“A female passenger subsequently raised an alarm that her mobile phone had been stolen while inside the vehicle,” he said.
Mr Ohaeri said the patrol team acted swiftly by stopping the vehicle and conducting a preliminary interrogation.
He added that during the process, the driver, identified as Idowu Mukaila, claimed he could facilitate the recovery of the phone.
“Shortly thereafter, another individual arrived and produced the stolen device, raising further suspicion of an organised criminal operation,” said Mr Ohaeri.
According to him, the matter was immediately reported to the command, and the suspects escorted for further investigation.
“Officials of the Park Management System (PMS), Oyo State Drivers’ Union, later disclosed that both the vehicle and driver had been under surveillance following several complaints linking them to phone theft and “one chance” activities within the metropolis.
“Following interrogation by the Sector Commander and Deputy Corps Commander Operations, the case was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Eleyele Division, for comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution,” he said.
Mr Ohaeri noted that the incident underscored the critical role of FRSC patrol operatives in enhancing road safety and supporting security efforts through vigilance, rapid response, and collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies.
The FRSC urged members of the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities promptly, and continue partnering with the corps to make Nigerian roads safer and more secure for all.
