FRSC corps marshal condoles LASUSTECH, families over students’ death

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has commiserated with the management, staff, and students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), over the death of three students.
In a statement by the FRSC spokesman, Olusegun Ogungbemide on Wednesday in Abuja, Mr Mohammed also expressed condolences to families of the victims.
The FRSC boss said that the three students died due to a multiple fatal crash that occurred at Sabo Roundabout, along the Shagamu–Ikorodu route, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The preliminary investigations by the FRSC showed that the crash, which involved six vehicles; a white Mitsubishi pickup, three commercial tricycles (TVS), a blue Toyota car, and a white Novo truck was caused by mechanical brake failure.
The brake failure reportedly led to a devastating chain collision involving eight persons.
Three victims, comprising two males and one female, all students of LASUSTECH sadly lost their lives, while five others were rescued, with two sustaining varying degrees of injury.
Rescue teams from the FRSC Ikorodu Unit Command responded swiftly to the distress call, ensuring prompt evacuation of the injured to the General Hospital, Ikorodu.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
In his condolence message, Mr Mohammed described the incident as “deeply painful and regrettable,” noting that the loss of young lives full of promise was a tragedy not only to the institution but also to the nation at large.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the LASUSTECH community, praying for the repose of the souls of the departed and for fortitude for their families to bear the loss.
The corps marshal also prayed that the souls of the deceased travellers rest in perfect peace.
He, however, cautioned motorists, particularly fleet and commercial vehicle operators, to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and technical checks.
He said these were especially brakes and tyres to prevent avoidable mechanical failures.
Mr Mohammed reiterated the corps’ resolve to intensify nationwide vehicle inspection and enforcement as part of efforts to make Nigerian roads safer for all users.
He also urged members of the public to report reckless driving, dangerous vehicles, or suspected mechanical defects through the FRSC’s toll-free emergency line 122, the FRSC Mobile App, or the nearest command.
