The Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) says it has commenced commenced operations against fake, misuse of number plates and overloading by motorists in the country.

The Assistant Corps Marshal, FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja, Elizabeth Akinlade, said this on Tuesday in Akure during Operation Guduma Phase 2

Mrs Akinlade said the operation was sequel to concerns raised by the Office of the National Security Adviser,(ONSA) on the proliferation of fake number plates.

She explained that the programme, which would end on Friday November 6,  was not limited to number plate violations.

According to her, the corps will also be arresting motorists for overloading and mixed loading of goods and human beings.

She, therefore, urged motorists to cooperate with FRSC officials and regularise their vehicle documents, saying the exercise was aimed at enhancing national security and safety on the roads.

She stated, “We conducted phase one in May 2026 and achieved a lot of results. We discovered that a lot of people are using fake number plates.

“Some drivers cover their number plates, some misuse the number plates and we are here to ensure that this violation is put to a stop.

“Some government officials that have the privilege of having official vehicles with official number plates, remove them and fix it on their private vehicles just to evade arrest.

“Every vehicle is supposed to have an identification, and number plate. It is a way to identify every vehicle that is linked to the owner. It is for the safety of everybody.

“Motorists should ensure they register their number plates and if it is missing, they should follow the normal procedure to get the replacement for their safety,” Mrs Akinlade said.

Also, FRSC Ondo State Sector Commander, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, said the corps had collaborated with other security agencies to ensure the success of the operation.

Mr Ibitoye also said personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were on ground.

He stated, “We have handed over a vehicle which evaded arrest and was suspected of carrying illicit substances to NDLEA.

“The NDLEA personnel are investigating and conducting a search on the vehicle so that if they are actually carrying any psychotropic or illegal substance, they can be taken from there.

“This is also for NDLEA to perform their duty for us to have a better country that is devoid of drug use, because drivers who use drugs are also potential causes of crashes,” he said.

Some illicit substances found on some passengers of the vehicle were handed over to NDLEA by the FRSC.
