The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bauchi Sector Command, has urged motorists to exercise extra caution during the rainy season to prevent crashes and enhance road safety across the state amid challenging weather conditions.

Route Commander of the command, Musa Kayo, gave the advice during an interview on Thursday in Bauchi, highlighting dangers associated with adverse weather conditions.

Mr Kayo said the command had commenced a media programme titled, “Driving Under Special Conditions,” led by the Deputy Corps Commander, Operations (DCCOPS), Abdullahi Muhammed, to strengthen road safety awareness among motorists.

He stated, “This is to help increase awareness among road users, on the dangers associated with adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, fog, strong winds, slippery roads and night driving, which significantly reduce visibility and vehicle control.”

He said the programme would be sustained throughout the rainy season to encourage effective driving habits, discourage dangerous overtaking and promote compliance with traffic regulations aimed at reducing preventable road crashes statewide.

The route commander advised motorists to ensure their vehicles remained roadworthy by checking critical components, including tyres, brakes, windscreen wipers and headlights, before embarking on journeys during adverse weather conditions.

“The sensitisation has commenced with a radio programme to educate motorists,” he said.

He also noted that the campaign would continue through various channels to reach more road users effectively statewide.

Mr Kayo stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations and other safety measures remained essential for preventing road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities, particularly during periods of reduced visibility and control.

He said the public enlightenment campaign formed part of the FRSC’s efforts to achieve a 10 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries through sustained education programmes.

Mr Kayo further urged road users to prioritise safety at all times, emphasising that responsible driving practices and compliance with road regulations remained critical to safeguarding lives nationwide.(NAN)
