Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), on Thursday, proceeded on an indefinite strike action over delayed salary payment.

A letter, jointly signed by the branch chairperson and financial secretary, O. A. Fagbuagun and Ngwu Benitho respectively, noted that the staff union’s resolution was in firm compliance with an earlier directive from its national executive council.

Conveying the branch’s decision to the management team, the academic staff union explained that its national body had resolved and instructed branches across the country to halt services, if salaries are not promptly paid by the third day of every month.

The letter stated, “This is to notify FUOYE Administration that the National Executive Council of ASUU has directed that in any case, where Academic Staff salary is not paid by the 3rd of every month, the affected Branch of ASUU should proceed on strike until the salary is paid.”

It added, “As a consequence of the above, we are using this medium to inform the Administration that ASUU-FUOYE Branch has proceeded on strike until our salary is paid.”

The union emphasised that its industrial action would be total, indefinite and comprehensive.

Earlier, the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, raised alarm over President Bola Tinubu’s administration failure to implement its long-dated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement.

The leadership also decried issues on outstanding salary arrears and government’s lack of commitment to revitalising universities’ standard.

Currently, ASUU branches across the country are conducting referendums to weigh members’ decisions, which will determine the body’s next line of action.
