Georgia welcomes the completion of talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia on a peace agreement, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili said on Wednesday.

“Georgia welcomes the completion of talks between Baku and Yerevan on the provisions of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It is undoubtedly a step forward in the presentation and use of the region’s potential and opportunities,” Mr Kavelashvili said at a joint news conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Georgia supported dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful coexistence in the South Caucasus and is ready to contribute to it, the Georgian leader said.

At the same time, Tbilisi supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, the Georgian president said.

“Georgia and Azerbaijan firmly support each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for that, I would like to once again express my gratitude to Mr President Aliyev. Georgia has always been an active supporter of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,’’ Mr Kavelashvili said.

He also expressed certainty that the future of the South Caucasus would be successful, economically strong, and prosperous, and the peoples of the region would live together, not under liberal values.

This would be in accordance with their customs and traditions.

The Georgian leader noted that lately, both Georgia and Azerbaijan have repeatedly become “the target of double standards and interference in internal affairs by foreign forces”.

In spite of such efforts, they managed to eliminate these threats and to ensure security and stability in the region.

Mr Kavelashvili is in Baku on an official visit. It is his first foreign trip since his inauguration in December 2024.

On March 13, the Armenian Foreign Ministry confirmed that negotiations on a peace treaty with Azerbaijan had concluded and the document was ready for signing.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry confirmed the end of negotiations on the draft.

On March 19, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he was ready to sign the treaty.

On March 20, Mr Pashinyan invited Mr Aliyev to begin consultations on its signing.
