Ghana police capture Nigerian Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, kill two gang members in failed bank robbery

GGhana police on Thursday foiled a bank robbery, killed two suspected armed robbers and arrested a gang member identified as a Nigerian national, Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, living in the country.
The Ghana Police Service in a statement said Mr Maazi was arrested and two members of the robbery gang killed during a planned robbery of some banks in Labone, Accra.
The police said they foiled the robbery attempts based on “intelligence that a gang of robbers were preparing to attack the GCB Bank, Ecobank and the Zenith Bank, all at Labone.”
“A police team was immediately deployed to Labone where the gang members were spotted in their vehicles parked close to the banks. Upon sighting the police, one of the vehicles sped off in an attempt to escape,” the police said.
The police added that Mr Maazi was captured alive as he and other members of the robbery gang attempted to escape.
It noted that two members of the robbery gang were shot dead, while two others escaped.
“The police gave them a chase and arrested suspect Augustine Okechukwu Maazi. The other occupant, however, managed to escape. The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to escape amidst firing. The police engaged them in a shootout, resulting in the death of two suspects,” the police said.
The police said Mr Maazi was in custody assisting with the investigation, adding that the bodies of the deceased suspects had been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
“Two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander vehicle with registration number GS-1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson vehicle with registration number GS 7915-17, and a blow pistol were recovered from the robbers,” police said.
