Ghana sacks two airport workers over extortion, sanctions official begging passenger for breakfast bribe
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) said it sacked two port health officers attached to the Accra International Airport’s Terminal 3 wing for extorting money a foreign passport holder seeking to obtain a Yellow Fever card.
A statement by the GACL management said the dismissed officers charged a passenger $40, exceeding the approved $20 fee for foreign passport holders and 100 cedis for Ghanaian passport holders.
The GACL stated, “Immediate action has been taken. Their ID cards to operate in the terminal have been withdrawn and deactivated. As of Thursday, 6th August 2026, the two officers are no longer permitted to work at Accra International Airport or any other GACL-operated airport.”
The airport company also acknowledged a viral video which showed a Ghana Immigration Service officer demanding “breakfast” money from a passenger.
A video seen by the Gazette showed a male passenger at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra questioning the female officer who requested money for “breakfast.”
“The Ghana Immigration Service has confirmed that the officer in question has since been transferred from the airport,” GACL said.
The company warned that it would keep close watch of its staff and urged passengers to “spot, record and report” extortion.
“Management reiterates: Everyone is being watched. We urge all passengers: Spot it. Record it. Report it. Use our dedicated hotline: 054217 5636 (Call/WhatsApp/Text),” the statement said.
It added, “Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) remains committed to a zero-tolerance policy on extortion and to protecting the integrity and reputation of Ghana’s airports.”
