President John Mahama of Ghana has approved the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic attacks against African nationals in the country.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Sam Ablakwa, said in a statement on Tuesday that Mr Mahama granted presidential approval for the evacuation.

“His Excellency John Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians in South Africa,” he said.

Mr Ablakwa said the distressed Ghanaians had earlier complied with the foreign ministry’s advisory and registered with the country’s high commission in Pretoria for evacuation following the latest wave of xenophobic attacks.

“The government of Ghana shall continue to safeguard the welfare of all Ghanaians home and abroad,” he added.

The development follows Ghana’s petition to the African Union over continued xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa.
