Several Ghanaians have demanded the closure of South African-owned businesses in the West African country.

A group, Ghana First Alliance, led a protest on Thursday in Accra to denounce the targeted attacks on Ghanaians and xenophobic tensions in South Africa.

A viral video of the protest showed participants chanting and holding placards inscribed with slogans such as ‘South Africa Must Go’, ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘We are Brothers and Sisters’, ‘Stop Afrophobia’, among others.

The action was also reportedly directed at MTN Ghana, DStv, and Gold Fields’ Tarkwa mining operations, with protesters calling for investigations into fees and operations, the closure of some businesses, and the non-renewal of leases for South African-owned companies.

The demonstration followed the Ghanaian government’s decision in May to evacuate its citizens from South Africa.

On May 24, Peoples Gazette reported that about 800 Ghanaians were in Pretoria, South Africa, awaiting repatriation.

On May 27, nearly 300 Ghanaian nationals were repatriated following a wave of anti-immigrant protests and concern for safety in South Africa.

South Africans accused citizens of other African countries, including Nigerians and Ghanaians, of taking their jobs, perpetrating crimes and residing in their country illegally.
