Ghana’s five-year $11 billion renewable plan praised

Kowatek Solar has hailed Ghana’s updated Renewable Energy Master Plan for 2026 to 2030, targeting 852 megawatt-peak of utility-scale solar and 709 megawatt-peak of utility-scale wind.
In a statement on Monday, the renewable energy company described the four-year plan as “a further signal that West African markets are raising clean-energy ambition alongside Nigeria’s new financing vehicles”.
Noting that solar was estimated to need about $631 million and wind about $999 million, Kowatek said the full cycle was put at about $10.8 billion, nearly twice the $5.6 billion attached to the 2019 plan.
The company said the plan will result in more than 353,000 jobs if manufacturing, installation and operations all land.
It added, “Summaries of the plan also cite 127 MW of new hydropower, 440 mini-grids for rural and island communities, 1.1 million solar lanterns, and targets for biofuel and improved cookstoves.”
According to Kowatek, coverage of the update noted that the previous cycle was held back by a coordination and monitoring structure that was not fully operational, which weakened data, reporting and evaluation.
It explained that the new numbers will be judged on procurement and grid connection, not on the plan text alone.
“For neighbours, the useful lesson is sequencing. Utility auctions and rural mini-grids need different capital and different contractors. Nigeria’s DRE Fund is aimed at the second of those,” it noted.
Kowatek said that Ghana’s master plan attempts to fund both, plus clean cooking, adding that firms that can design hybrid plants for commercial loads will see work on either side of the border if the tenders are real.
