Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat and congratulated John Dramani Mahama on Saturday following Ghana’s hotly contested presidential election.

Mr Bawumia, 61, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the election results coming in were not favourable to him and expressed his commitment to a peaceful transition of power.

During his early morning address on Sunday, Mr Bawumia said he had called former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama and congratulated him.

In the address before the official announcement of the results, he assured Mr Mahama of his full support in ensuring peace and development continued uninterrupted in Ghana.

“I’ve just called His Excellency John Mahama to congratulate him as president-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

Mr Bawumia’s party faced economic challenges in Ghana under the outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo.
