Girls facing life challenges deserve second chance at education, says Remi Tinubu
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that girls whose education was disrupted by life’s challenges are given a second opportunity to have formal education.
Mrs Tinubu gave the assurance on Friday while inaugurating the newly renovated Alternative High School for Girls at Agboju in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Represented by the wife of the vice-president, Nana Shettima, the first lady noted that the school was established in 2007 during the tenure of President Bola Tinubu as governor of Lagos State.
She said the school was established to provide girls whose education was disrupted by early pregnancy and other socio-economic challenges with an opportunity to return to school, complete their secondary education and acquire vocational skills.
The renovated school comprises two blocks with more than 26 classrooms.
The school also has a well-equipped library and information and communication technology facilities.
It also has agriculture, physics and biology laboratories and will teach cosmetology, garment-making, hairdressing, catering and home economics.
Mrs Tinubu said the establishment of the school was based on the conviction that no girl or woman should be denied the opportunity to reach her full potential because of challenges.
She expressed delight at the renovation and equipping of the school through the intervention of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The first lady praised the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, and her team members for their commitment to improving the learning environment.
She urged the Lagos State government to establish another alternative high school for Girls in the Lagos Central Senatorial District.
According to her, the school has been established in Lagos West and Lagos East.
She urged the state to ensure the effective operation and proper maintenance of the schools to enable more girls to complete secondary education and acquire relevant skills.
