The Gombe Joint Projects Development Agency has successfully completed the installation of over 5,000 solar-powered street lights across 10 LGAs.

Mahmood Yusuf, the director-general  of the agency, disclosed this on Wednesday in Gombe.

GJPDA was established by the Gombe government and is committed to driving infrastructure and grassroots development across the councils.

Mr Yusuf explained that the solar lighting project was designed not only to enhance night-time visibility but also to improve security, reduce crime rates, and promote economic activity during darkness.

He also revealed that the agency had begun constructing a befitting secretariat for the State Council of Emirs and Chiefs, a project aimed at strengthening the traditional institution’s role in governance and community development.

According to him, the initiative reflects the administration’s recognition of the critical role traditional rulers play in peace building, cultural preservation, and grassroots mobilisation.

“The project is not just about infrastructure; it is about giving the traditional institution the dignity and functional space it deserves,” he said.

The director-general listed other achievements, including the construction of new secretariats in some LGAs, the renovation and remodelling of palaces of emirs, chiefs, and district heads, as well as the construction of market stalls, grain markets, and other community-based projects.

He also stated that plans were underway to establish a mini solar-powered electricity grid in the Balanga LGA, aiming to boost energy access and complement the state government’s efforts in this regard.

He added that the projects were selected based on community requests and priorities, thereby ensuring local ownership and sustainability.

He added that funding responsibilities were shared between the state government and the LGAs, with contribution ratios adjusted according to each council’s financial strength.
