The High Court in Glasgow, Scotland, has ordered the remand of a former police sergeant, Campbell Petrie, after being found guilty of raping two women while asleep at different time. 

The 50-year-old defendant from Muirend in Glasgow, was convicted of nine charges involving a catalogue of physical and sexual abuse towards both women between 2006 and 2022, the Glasgow Times reported on Thursday.

In 2011, he was said to have taken advantage of her at a flat in the South side of Glasgow, had sex with her after she was drunk and unable to consent.

At his trial, the defendant who was promoted to the rank of sergeant during the offences, denied the accusations, saying “I would never do that while someone was asleep. There was never any time she was forced to do anything. She was fully consenting.”

Defence KC Edith Forrest quizzed the defendant on one of the women’s sexual allegation against him, including a testimony of how he raped her in the changing rooms of a leisure centre in Lanarkshire.

Mr Petrie responded, “That never took place at all in the swimming baths, there or anywhere public.”

Describing the victims as a “bit starry-eyed,” but “pretty” and “out of his league,” Mr Petrie claimed he discovered she was interested in him, which he said was an “ego boost,” adding that he was “more flattered than anything else” considering the age gap.

Responding, the victim told the court that, “he did not like me working with men,” adding that he made weight jibes and tried to get her to stand on scales, and was also said to have raked through bins to check on what she had eaten.

The woman who recalled that he warned he would harm her if she ever left him, alleged that he physically assaulted her, and once hounded her at a friend’s home despite being warned not to come near.

She also accusing him of trying to ban her from going on social media and made her lose contact with friends.

However, Mr Petrie stated, “I would certainly not make threats to kill anyone.”

The defendant’s other victim, who earlier suffered at his hands, accused him of “love-bombing” her after they met in a queue in a Tesco supermarket in Glasgow’s Springburn while he was on shift.

She said he “immediately found her quite attractive,” prompting them to meet at the city’s Baird Street station and thereafter, remained in contact.

According to her, things between them initially went well, but he soon changed and started calling her names like “fat cow,” adding that, “He wanted me to be a skinny blonde.”

Following the allegation made by one of both women, the defendant was arrested at his home in 2009, and subsequently held in a cell for up to five hours before eventually being released.

Mr Petrie who remained in the force, got promoted before being arrested again in December 2022, eventually retired in December 2025, before taking a job at his friend’s sports shop.

Closing his speech, Prosecutor Paul Harvey, urged the court to convict Mr Petrie, saying “Each woman spoke to Petrie doing sexual things to them while asleep.

“Each of them being pestered by Petrie, speaking about sexual offending against the background of a general long-term pattern of control and abuse. Each of them knowing what he could be like if he did not get his way.”

Telling the defendant who had been on bail, that the “gravity of the crimes committed cannot be overstated,” Judge Alistair Watson, ordered that he be remanded in custody until his sentencing billed for October.
