Gombe LG poll records high turnout as voters commend exercise

Some voters in Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State have expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the ongoing council polls.
A correspondent, who monitored the exercise on Saturday in Kwami, reports that voters have turned out en masse to exercise their franchise.
The Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) is conducting the exercise across 11 local government areas and 13 development areas for the election of council chairmen and councillors.
However, some polling units recorded a low turnout of women, as only a few female voters joined queues to cast their votes.
Abdullahi Idris, a voter, described the exercise as smooth and excellent.
He said the high turnout of voters at the polling unit was an indication that the electorate were exercising their rights as citizens of the country.
Mr Idris said the exercise was peaceful, adding that, “There were no bad feelings from the elders to the youths and women.
“This is a clear indication that democracy is accepted at all levels in the state,” he said.
A female voter, Maryam Isa, expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the exercise.
Ms Isa said the election was better organised compared to previous exercises in the state, stressing that the improvement was good for democracy, especially at the grassroots.
She urged women to come out en masse and vote for candidates of their choice.
